At 20%, an amount of €1,000.00 without VAT becomes €1,200.00 with VAT: the tax is €200.00. Working back, €1,200.00 including VAT is €1,000.00 before VAT. Enter an amount, say whether it already includes VAT, and pick the Bulgarian rate (20%, 9% or 0%) to see the VAT and the total.
Page updated 23 October 2026. VAT rates checked on 23 October 2026 against the National Revenue Agency (НАП) and the VAT Act (ЗДДС).
€1,000.00 without VAT plus €200.00 VAT (20%) is €1,200.00 with VAT.
| Without VAT | €1,000.00 |
| VAT (20%) | €200.00 |
| With VAT | €1,200.00 |
Amounts are rounded to the cent, half up, so the parts always add up to the total. Invoicing software that rounds line by line can differ by 1 cent.
Example: €1,000.00 without VAT at 20% is €1,200.00 with VAT, and €1,200.00 including VAT is €1,000.00 before VAT, of which €200.00 is VAT.
| 20% | Standard rate (ЗДДС, чл. 66): taxable supplies of goods and services in Bulgaria, imports and intra-EU acquisitions. |
| 9% | Reduced rate (ЗДДС, чл. 66а): hotel accommodation, books, and baby food and nappies, as the Act lists them. |
| 0% | Zero rate (ЗДДС, чл. 66б): the supplies the Act names for it (чл. 53, 64а, 140, 146, 173 and chapter three). |

At the standard rate of 20%, the VAT on €1,000.00 is €200.00, so the price with VAT is €1,200.00. At the 9% rate the VAT on the same amount would be €90.00; at 0% there is none. Change the rate in the form above.
Divide the price by 1 plus the rate: at 20%, €1,200.00 ÷ 1.20 = €1,000.00 before VAT, and the VAT is the difference, €200.00. Subtracting 20% of €1,200.00 would give the wrong net. Choose "Amount with VAT" in the form to do it for any amount.
Three: 20% standard (ЗДДС, чл. 66), 9% for hotel accommodation, books, and baby food and nappies (чл. 66а), and 0% for the supplies the Act names (чл. 66б). The exact lists are in the Act and on the НАП page; if your sale is not clearly on a list, the standard rate applies unless an accountant tells you otherwise.
Once it is registered for VAT. Registration is mandatory when taxable turnover passes the national threshold of €51,130 (ЗДДС, чл. 96, ал. 1, from 1 January 2026), and some businesses register earlier or by choice. Our guide explains when registration is mandatory and when it pays to register voluntarily.
The arithmetic is exact to the cent: €1,000.00 + €200.00 = €1,200.00, rounded half up. The invoice itself must follow your accounting software and the invoicing rules, which can round line by line and differ by a cent. For a question about which rate applies to your sale, ask your accountant.
