# VAT calculator Bulgaria 2026: price with and without VAT

At 20%, an amount of €1,000.00 without VAT becomes €1,200.00 with VAT: the tax is €200.00. Working back, €1,200.00 including VAT is €1,000.00 before VAT. Enter an amount, say whether it already includes VAT, and pick the Bulgarian rate (20%, 9% or 0%) to see the VAT and the total.

Page updated 23 October 2026. VAT rates checked on 23 October 2026 against the National Revenue Agency (НАП) and the VAT Act (ЗДДС).

€1,000.00 without VAT plus €200.00 VAT (20%) is €1,200.00 with VAT.

| Without VAT | €1,000.00 |
| --- | --- |
| VAT (20%) | €200.00 |
| With VAT | €1,200.00 |

Amounts are rounded to the cent, half up, so the parts always add up to the total. Invoicing software that rounds line by line can differ by 1 cent.

## How VAT is worked out

1. To add VAT, take the rate of the amount without VAT: €1,000.00 × 20% = €200.00.
2. The price with VAT is the sum of the two: €1,000.00 + €200.00 = €1,200.00.
3. To take VAT out of a price that already includes it, divide by 1 plus the rate (by 1.20 at 20%). Do not subtract 20% of the total: that removes too much.

Example: €1,000.00 without VAT at 20% is €1,200.00 with VAT, and €1,200.00 including VAT is €1,000.00 before VAT, of which €200.00 is VAT.

## Frequently asked questions

### How much VAT do I add to €1,000.00 in Bulgaria?

At the standard rate of 20%, the VAT on €1,000.00 is €200.00, so the price with VAT is €1,200.00. At the 9% rate the VAT on the same amount would be €90.00; at 0% there is none. Change the rate in the form above.

### How do I take VAT out of a price that includes it?

Divide the price by 1 plus the rate: at 20%, €1,200.00 ÷ 1.20 = €1,000.00 before VAT, and the VAT is the difference, €200.00. Subtracting 20% of €1,200.00 would give the wrong net. Choose "Amount with VAT" in the form to do it for any amount.

### Which VAT rates apply in Bulgaria in 2026?

Three: 20% standard (ЗДДС, чл. 66), 9% for hotel accommodation, books, and baby food and nappies (чл. 66а), and 0% for the supplies the Act names (чл. 66б). The exact lists are in the Act and on the НАП page; if your sale is not clearly on a list, the standard rate applies unless an accountant tells you otherwise.

### When does a business have to charge VAT?

Once it is registered for VAT. Registration is mandatory when taxable turnover passes the national threshold of €51,130 (ЗДДС, чл. 96, ал. 1, from 1 January 2026), and some businesses register earlier or by choice. Our guide explains when registration is mandatory and when it pays to register voluntarily.

### Is the result exact, and can I use it on an invoice?

The arithmetic is exact to the cent: €1,000.00 + €200.00 = €1,200.00, rounded half up. The invoice itself must follow your accounting software and the invoicing rules, which can round line by line and differ by a cent. For a question about which rate applies to your sale, ask your accountant.
