The introduction of the euro in Bulgaria is one of the most important economic steps for the country. For business, this means both new challenges and significant benefits. The transition to the Еuro Area will require adaptation in accounting, trading practices and personnel management, but in the long run it will bring more stability and competitiveness.
In this article, we will look at what the new obligations are for businesses and what benefits the introduction of the euro will bring.
1. Double Display Prices
For a transitional period from 08.08.2025 to 08.08.2026, companies are obliged to display prices simultaneously in BGN and EUR – on labels, receipts, websites, offers and invoices.
2. Updating accounting and business systems
Accounting and fiscal software, ERP systems, online platforms and cash registers will have to adapt to working in euros.
3. Recalculation of salaries and employment contracts
All remunerations, social security contributions and bonuses will have to be converted from BGN to EUR at the official fixed exchange rate. Salaries and other remuneration for work are NOT subject to the requirement of double labeling and do NOT need to be submitted to the payslips in euro and BGN during the period of double labeling. The employers will be obliged to guarantee that in the currency conversion of salaries from 1.01.2026, employees will not receive less. The introduction of the euro does not require the re-signing of employment contracts. There is no need to change the bank accounts to which the remuneration is transferred.
4. Contractual relations
The introduction of the euro does not affect the operation of existing contracts with references to the lev. The values in the existing legal instruments indicated in BGN are considered to be values in euro when applying the official exchange rate and the rules for currency conversion and rounding. The introduction of the euro does not change the time limits in legal documents or exempt from obligation or performance.
1. Reducing the cost of foreign exchange operations
Bank fees and commissions for exchange between BGN and EUR will be eliminated. This is a significant advantage for exporters, importers, and companies with frequent international payments.
2. More accessible and cheaper credit resources
Access to euro area financial channels and Central European Bank support can lead to easier access to funding. Foreign investors could also be more inclined to invest in Bulgaria.
3. Easier integration into European markets
With a common currency, businesses will be able to set their prices in euros, negotiate and invoice more easily. This will facilitate e-commerce, exports and international partnerships, and is an important step towards better integration of Bulgarian companies into the common European market.
4. Increased trust and transparency
The euro is a symbol of stability and trust. For Bulgarian companies, this means a better image, easier partnership building, greater transparency in pricing and a stronger position on the international stage.
The introduction of the euro in Bulgaria brings with it new obligations for businesses – from double display of prices to recalculation of salaries and adaptation of accounting systems. In the short term, the transition will require reorganization of processes, resources and training.
But in the long run, the benefits for companies are far more significant: lower costs, elimination of currency risk, easier integration into European markets and more trust from partners and investors.
For businesses, this is not just a currency change – it is an opportunity for more sustainable growth and a stronger presence in the European economy.
